The green box of greatness… Laszlo Vass shoes.

The green box of greatness… Laszlo Vass shoes.

Back in the nineties I have traveled many times in Budapest. Walking on the banks of Danube and on the streets of this vibrant cosmopolitan city was a pure delight. What was more exciting for me was that, despite the fact that Hungary was a former Communist country, a large number of true craftsmen survived the regime. Among them, the shop of Laszlo Vass is a magnificent exemple of Austro-Hungarian shoemaking tradition. At that time, being a teenager, I did not had the funds to buy Laszlo Vass  shoes but the time spend in front of his shop-window was  a feast for my eyes  and the  the seeds of  passion for shoes started to grow.

Now being a big boy and hearing only good opinions about Vass shoes I decided to try one pair. The chosen one was Old English II model. The waiting time was six weeks but they definetly worth waiting for.

As you can see from the pictures below there are many things to say about a almost perfect pair of shoes. I had to chose from New Peter Last (for wholecut models), R last (English type especially for Oxford cut) and the new Italian Style range of lasts : F – Firenze (round toe last) and the famous U – Ugolini last (square toe) a result of the cooperation with Roberto Ugolini. For now the chosen one was F last but in the  future I will also give the more italian look U last a try.  The F last is very confortable. You can walk all day in those shoes and experience no foot pain. The leather lining is very soft, and features Vass’s factory markings. There was no discomfort in breaking them in and the leather (antique cognac boxcalf) is  top quality. For the sole Vass used Rendenbach. I have not opted for Italian polish for the simple reason that I wanted to check more thoroughly the quality of the leather used. And I confess I was not dissaponted at all.
